Honoring the Past. Empowering the Future.
Established in 1873, the University Book Store has a long-standing history of serving the Iowa State University community. It began in a small room in Beardshear Hall and quickly grew to meet the needs of a developing campus. In 1892, the Hub was constructed to house the Book Store, along with a post office and waiting area for the Dinkey — the steam motor line that connected Ames to campus. For 66 years, the Book Store operated with a traditional counter service model before relocating to the Memorial Union in 1958.
This move enabled a transition to self-service, expanded offerings, and greater accessibility. In response to continued growth, the Book Store doubled its space in the Memorial Union with a 12,000-square-foot expansion in 2006.Today, the ISU Book Store stands at the heart of campus, proudly serving students and their families, faculty, staff, alumni, and Cyclone fans across the globe.
